Looking for a job

Video Transcript

The host, a young man in his twenties, appears on screen in front of an all-white backdrop and begins to speak. The words "you’re hunting for a job" appear to his right, followed by the words "how do you do it?"

So, you’re hunting for a job. How do you do it—especially when a lot of jobs aren’t even advertised?

The words "3 words" appear on screen to his left. He then disappears from screen and the words "talk to everybody" fill the screen.

Three words: talk to everybody.

A network of stick people appear on screen, connected to one another with web-like lines. The host reappears on screen, and the word "referral" pops up beside him.

You’ve gotta network! That means talking to friends, family, people at school, your parents’ friends—you get the picture. Because most jobs are found through personal referrals.

Two cartoon heads face one another. The one on the right has two exclamation marks and a question mark appear in his head.

But what do you say?

The host re-appears on full screen. Then a stopwatch appears beside him, counting up to 10 seconds. The stopwatch disappears and the words "this kind of job," "this industry," and "this location" appear beside him.

Well first, know what kind of job you want. And always have your 10-second pitch ready. You know, like "I’m looking for this kind of job, in this industry and in this location."

The host continues to speak to the camera; the words "take advantage" and "every opportunity" appear beside him.

It also means taking advantage of every opportunity that you can find.

Two cartoon heads appear and face one another again. The head on the right appears to speak, and then a question mark appears between them. The head on the left has a light bulb turn on inside it, indicating an idea. A checkmark then appears between the two heads to indicate a positive response.

The trick is, every time you talk to someone, ask if they know anybody who’s hiring. Then, if they do, ask if they’d be willing to put in a good word for you.

A laptop computer appears in the centre of the screen. The letters "www" appear on the laptop screen. A target then takes the place of the letters. A cursor hand comes in and points to the centre of the target. The words "job search" appear, followed by a number of well-known logos, including Facebook, Twitter, and Linked-In.

You should also network online, searching jobs by type and location. Update your social networks, and tell your friends that you’re looking.

A rough drawing of a résumé appears on screen.

Get your résumé out there, and follow up.

The words "apply" and "network" appear on screen, followed by a cartoon head with a green checkmark inside it and a happy face.

Keep applying, keep networking, and keep an open mind.

Host re-appears on screen to speak the final lines.

Your dream job is probably not going to be the first one that you land, but it’s a start.
