Don’t vacation – staycation! Enjoy Canada!

You know when people ask you “What’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten?” And sometimes you find yourself stumped? You’ve eaten so much in your life it’s hard to narrow it down. Well, friends, I’ve figured it out.
Growing up in Canada, sometimes it’s natural to assume that the grass is greener in other parts of the world, including things like cuisine, landscapes or attractions. Well, as much as I’ve enjoyed my travel experiences abroad, I can safely say that Canada is still my favourite place to play tourist. The best food I’ve ever eaten in my life—up until this point, of course—hails from Quebec.
Last year I went to Quebec City on what I refer to as a “gastronomical staycation.” Gastronomy is a big word that basically means “the art of food eating”. I chose to explore Canada, Quebec in particular, because I was not in a financial position to explore the world. I instead opted for a “staycation” by travelling to locations that are less costly and accessible by car. Quebec City fit the bill and thus you have “Rob’s gastronomical staycation”. I’m pleased to say that I will be revisiting this beautiful city soon! I plan to eat lots.
Beyond food though, because there is in fact more to Canada than the food, are the incredible landscapes. A friend of mine lives in Jasper, Alberta. I see photos on social media and I am completely in awe of the beautiful mountains and landscapes. Some people pay thousands of dollars to fly to destinations that are only half as beautiful, and my friend has a picturesque view right from her bedroom window.
Experiencing Canada is more than just what you see on a daily basis. In Canada we are lucky to have fabulous beaches, incredible landscapes and architecture, and places that represent deep Canadian heritage and history. Take the time to really and thoroughly explore it. Recently, a friend of mine graduated university and to commemorate that, she and her boyfriend decided to pack up a car and do a cross-Canada tour! I would love to do that one day.
On that note, I think my next Canadian “staycation” will be out to the East Coast. Imagine the water, the scenery and, of course, all of that delicious East Coast food!
Where is your favourite place to visit in Canada?

Couldn't agree more Rob! I've driven this country from coast to coast, and can honestly say that some of the most awe-inspiring moments were spent in our own backyard. I've seen whales near the harbour in Victoria and participated in the luminaries festival in Vancouver. Growing up in Edmonton, I got the chance to take in the best Fringe festival in the land.. Winnipeg is quite possibly the most welcoming city in Canada and recently I took my family to Niagara Falls. Unbelievable. Every corner of Montreal has a new surprise, and the folks in Halifax are the nicest people you'll ever meet! I also figure you've got to try at least one lobster supper in PEI - or you haven't really lived. Awesome post Rob! I hope more Canadians take advantage of our beautiful country!

Thank you for your comment. It’s very true that Canada has some amazing things to offer and you’re lucky to have been able to experience so much of that with your family. I would absolutely love to visit the East Coast. It’s on my wish list!
