Making the transition from school to work

Making the transition from school to work
Posted by on July 22, 2013
I’ve officially been out of school for a year, and let me tell you, it took some getting used to.
Even in the best of circumstances and times, the transition from full-time school to the workforce is a complex process in many ways. For many of us, school and its dependable routine has been a source of regularity and comfort for us since our days of velcro shoes and action figures.
“The Time Void” can be one of the first things you notice about finishing school and starting up work. I went through it. I felt it! It took so much for me to create a brand new routine for myself that no longer revolved around academia and homework. You suddenly have all of this free time that used to be filled by homework or various assignments. It takes time to find out what works for you, but know that now is the time for you to take charge of your life.
A dear friend of mine used to say, “become the CEO of your own life, Rob”. It never made much sense until after I finished school because my academics always served as an anchor into a particular youthful state of mind. Now that the anchor is gone, I’m free to sail in whatever direction I would like to pursue.
What my friend meant was that he wanted me to look at my own life as a business. You make the decisions – no one else. You can fulfil your own vision by drafting a personal mission statement and laying out personal objectives that will help guide your business to success.
Always keep your personal mission statement in the back of your mind. It will help you uncover your passions or career goals.
How are you adjusting to the transition from work to school?
