The Government of Canada’s 2013 Budget was released on March 21st and, as the youth.gc.ca blogger, I decided I owed it to my readers to pick out some of the highlights that are relevant to young Canadians planning their careers, learning new skills and finding jobs. So here goes:
- The New Canada Job Grant will provide $15,000 or more per person, with a maximum federal contribution of $5,000 to be matched by provinces, territories and employers, to ensure people are getting the skills employers are looking for to fill jobs.
- Through the Career Focus program, the Government will support another 5,000 paid internships for recent post-secondary graduates. This adds to the Budget 2012’s commitment of funding for 3,000 paid internships in high-demand fields.
- Continued support for Pathways to Education Canada, which will help provide nearly 4,000 low-income youth pursue the completion of their secondary studies.
- $19 million over two years to give young Canadians access to better labour market information and develop new ways of promoting fields in high-demand, including science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the skilled trades.
- $241 millionover five years to improve the on-reserve Income Assistance Program, including $109 million to help ensure First Nations youth can access the skills and training they need to secure employment.
- $18 millionover two years to the Canadian Youth Business Foundation to help young entrepreneurs grow their firms.
These are some great investments to young Canadians. I know many people who would benefit from the programs listed above. Will you?
