Seasonal employment: holiday edition

Seasonal employment: holiday edition
November 13, 2012
As you may know, “seasonal employment” is temporary employment that helps satisfy a short-term need for extra labour or employees. Seasonal positions often occur at busy times for certain industries, like harvest season for fruit orchards or the winter sports season for ski hills.
For students, seasonal employment often takes place during either the summer season or the winter holidays. And, since the winter holidays are approaching, this means that seasonal job opportunities are coming up soon!
Like many students or young workers, you’ve probably already worked a retail or customer service job. If you like this type of work, holiday employment may be a good choice! From clothing stores to coffee shops to grocery stores, many employers are looking for temporary workers to help with the influx of holiday shoppers.
Before every holiday season, I always looked for a retail job, and I always started early. Right around mid-November! Employers need time to get you fully trained and ready to handle the December rush, so start handing out those resumés ASAP! When I looked for seasonal jobs, I would apply to a couple of stores in a mall. Malls get extremely busy during the holidays and there are usually many businesses looking for some extra help.
If retail or customer service isn’t your thing, consider the background jobs at retail establishments. Big electronics stores, grocery stores and department stores often need workers to help manage their warehouse inventory and incoming merchandise.
Remember that seasonal employment is temporary. Seasonal employment contracts usually have a set end date. If you find that your seasonal job isn’t something you enjoy, you’re not locked in forever. But, if you would like to make it more regular, here’s a tip: talk to your boss. Many of my friends spoke to their bosses and managed to turn their temporary employment into part-time employment during the school year.
If you’re looking to make some extra money in your free time over the holidays, seasonal employment is a great way to do it!
