Careers: Planning Ahead

September 10, 2012

We all know the reason for continuing your education after high school is to learn more. The end goal of all this learning is to make you skilled and knowledgeable in a certain subject area, so you can work, and continue to learn, in that specific field.

Since most people plan to work full-time for at least 30 years, choosing a career is a big decision. So, when planning your career, your first step is choosing the right post-secondary education.

When deciding what to study after high school, one of the most important things to consider is your interests. If you’re going to spend the next 30 years working in a particular field, why not make sure it’s something you enjoy? That being said, it’s definitely helpful to consider interpretations of your current interests. For example, if you’re into sports, being a professional athlete isn’t your only option. You might also consider being a teacher, a kinesiologist, a sports nutritionist, or even a journalist for an online sports magazine.

Another important consideration about post-secondary education is the financial investment. In my opinion, spending thousands of dollars to go to school can only be considered a real investment if you gain something from it.

To make sure your education is a wise investment, find out how current job prospects look for your future career. To find out if a specific career is in demand right now, consider checking out some labour market information using the Working in Canada search tool.

Overall, your education and career involve a lot of planning. Doing your research, investing your time and money wisely, and being realistic about the outcome will all help you in the long run.
