Part-time bliss

August 20, 2012

For many students, summer is all about full-time work. It’s the season for working hard, having fun, and saving money for the school year. As September approaches, many students decide to look for a part-time job. If you’re one of those students thinking about working part-time during school, here are some tips to help you plan for your job hunt.

The first tip is to be realistic about your situation. Know your weekly school schedule, and be reasonable about how many hours of work you can fit in. If you have 16 hours of classes to attend and 8 hours of lab time in addition to homework, maybe working 20 hours a week isn’t the best idea. Stress can negatively affect your life, so don’t take on too much.

It’s also a good idea to remember that school is your top priority. It is important to find an employer who respects basic employment standards and respects your responsibilities as a student.

Another excellent piece of advice is to be prepared.  A good way to do this is by updating your job-hunting documents. You will need to update your résumé, adding all the new skills and responsibilities you learned from your summer job. You may also want to write cover letters to accompany your résumé. Finally, you can start looking around for job openings. The earlier, the better! And, don’t forget to network.

The last tip? Keep an open mind. A part time job isn’t going to be your job forever, and it’s only for a few hours a week! Maybe you never thought you’d be serving coffee or answering phones, but that’s okay. Even if the job isn’t related specifically to what you’re studying, you’ll still be learning valuable workplace skills that every employer can appreciate.
