Interviews come in many forms

June 29, 2012

If I landed an interview, my initial assumption would be to prepare for a one-on-one interview at the employer’s office. However, the reality is that many employers are straying from the norm and conducting interviews in some unconventional ways. Here are just a few that you should be aware of...

Group interviews

In this case, you’ll be interviewed at the same time as the other candidates for the position. Employers are looking to see if you stand out in a crowd while still interacting well with others. The one thing you can be sure of is that they won’t pick the quiet one who didn’t say anything, so speak up and be yourself!

Interviews in public places

These interviews tend to have a more casual tone and usually take place at a coffee shop or food court. The atmosphere may be more relaxing than a dingy office, but don’t get too comfortable! Prepare just as you would for any other interview and try not to be distracted by the commotion around you.

Phone interviews

Phone interviews can sometimes be the most nerve-racking because a large part of the way we normally communicate is with body language. Try to avoid using too many fillers such as “like” or “umm” when speaking and just answer honestly—You’ll be fine!

Panel interviews

This style can sometimes seem the most intimidating. You’ll usually sit across from multiple people who have a say in whether you’re hired. Just direct your answers at the individual who is asking you a question and stay relaxed.

Preparing for a one-on-one interview is much different than for a group or phone interview. If the interview type wasn’t specified when you were contacted for an interview, it would be in your best interest to give the employer a quick call or e-mail to double-check.

Leave a comment and let me know about any other types of interviews you’ve come across and any tips you might have for anyone who might be prepping for the same.
