Your network is bigger than you think

June 8, 2012

Don’t limit your job hunt to job boards and newspaper listings, because the vast majority of new job openings go unadvertised. To avoid the time and money spent on posting an advertisement and going through a pile of résumés, many employers rely on their networks to find qualified workers fast.

Your current network probably connects you to more possible employers than you think. It can include family, friends, neighbours, acquaintances, teachers, former employers… the list could go on and on. It’s one thing to have a network, but another to use it! The people in your network might be willing to ask around in their own networks for opportunities, but they won’t know to ask unless they know you’re searching. So when you’re looking for a job, it’s perfectly fine to approach those in your network and see if they can ask around for you or if they’ve heard of any opportunities.

If you feel like your network could use a boost, you can check out some tips on how to build it from Service Canada.

I’ve landed all of my jobs through networking. Whether it be through family, friends, coaches, or employer contacts, my network has been pretty good to me so far! What kind of jobs have you landed through your networks?

Happy hunting!
