When I grow up...

When I grow up...
July 6, 2011
What do you want to be when you grow up? When I was younger, I couldn’t decide what I wanted to be. At one point, I wanted to be either a whale trainer or a professional sprinter, but it wasn’t long before I realized there aren’t many whales to train in Canada and that I wasn’t going to hold my title of “fastest kid at recess” for very long.
For those of you who have absolutely no idea what you want to do, I highly recommend visiting a very cool website that deserves a lot more attention than it gets. Working in Canada is an amazing online tool that provides great information about jobs and helps you make career choices. For example, if you’re thinking about becoming a Chef in Vancouver, this website will tell you, among many other things, that:
- the average wage is $17.02 per hour
- some of the typical skills required are good hand-eye coordination, teamwork, and flexibility
- depending on the employer, a diploma and certification is usually required when looking for a job
Knowing this type of information before enrolling in a college or university program will help you plan for your future. So make the right choice! Start by exploring this website and, who knows, maybe you’ll discover something you’re truly passionate about.
Leave a comment and let me know what you want to be when you “grow up”... or maybe what you wanted to be. :)

"The Working in Canada site is really great! It enables you also to view job postings for the occupations you select. It is very useful to get a feel for what job postings typically look like for your desired occupation."
