Are you getting your fair share?

June 29, 2011

We’ve all heard the “When I was your age…” stories from our folks. Stories about having to hand write letters or playing music on Compact Discs, or “CDs” for short.

One story that may sound familiar is “When I was your age, I only made 75¢ an hour!” Of course give or take about 50¢ depending on who is telling the story and what province or territory they worked in at the time.

Did you know that today’s minimum wages vary depending on the province you work in?

Some provinces and territories have different rates depending on your age or the amount of work experience you have. Some also depend on the type of work you are doing. Ontario, for example, has a separate minimum wage for student workers under the age of 18, while Nova Scotia has a separate wage for inexperienced employees; those who do not have more than three months of experience in their current employment.

For the specifics on labour laws regarding minimum wage standards in your area, you should check out the Minimum Wage Database. It’s your right to know! While there, you can also read up on other interesting facts like the length and number of breaks you’re entitled to on a shift or the health and safety procedures that should be in place at your work.

So take your new found knowledge and make sure you’re being paid at least the minimum required by law.
