Who's hiring?

Who’s hiring?

So you’ve decided it’s time to find a job, but don’t know where to start?
Finding employers that are hiring can turn out to be harder than you’d think. You can always check online job hunting sites like Job Bank, or sometimes you can find postings in your local newspaper. However, I’ve been told that only about 15 – 20 percent of job openings are actually advertised which leaves you a ton of job opportunities to find on your own!
I got my first job through one of my high school coaches. It was the end of tenth grade and I had mentioned I wanted to try and find a job for the summer. My coach instantly thought of a friend of his that owned a small glass and mirror installation shop. He told me they normally hire an extra person for summer help and it would be about now that they would begin looking for someone. My coach encouraged me to stop by and let them know that he sent me. I was really nervous but I took a chance and stopped by anyway. The owners turned out to be some of the nicest people I know. They were a little hesitant to take me on, as they had never hired anyone so young, but they did anyway and I couldn’t thank them enough! I ended up going back for the next three summers and learned a lot about installing windows… a lot!
Anyway, the point of my story is that nobody knows where or how they’ll find their next job. Your best bet is to just let people know that you’re looking for a job. Talk to a teacher, a neighbour, a family friend, aunts, uncles, and even your friends. Don’t wait for the job to come to you. Chances are if you see an ad in the paper for a job, so will a lot of other people, creating lots of competition for one spot. If you find an opening through word of mouth though, your odds of getting the job are much higher!
I hope you find something you enjoy!

"hi Derek nice post! Your posts have help me a lot. But I'm trying to find a job related to what I'm studying right now, International Business. I'm a international student, I have never work before and some of the people I meet here said that it's going to be impossible for me to fine a job relate to what I'm studying. Any recommendation?"

"Hey Susana! International Business, and Business in general, are pretty broad degrees and open you to many different opportunities. WorkinginCanada.gc.ca has a pretty cool tool that lets you see where former graduates from similar programs ended up working. Here is the direct link to the International Business page. From the Web site’s homepage you can also search specific job titles and find job postings across Canada. Good luck in your search and let me know how it goes!"
