Practice Made Perfect!

June 16, 2011

So after my last post, I started thinking about a particular girl last summer whose story might calm your nerves and give you an extra boost of confidence!

Her name was Emily and she had dropped in to her local Service Canada Centre to get some tips on her resume. A local grocery store was hiring and she wanted to apply. This was her first time applying for a job, so she wanted to make sure she was doing everything she could to make a great first impression. Our team helped her spruce up her resume and she loved the final product. As she was about to leave, she had one more question: “What should I expect if I get an interview?”. I suggested we do some role play and I pretended to be the grocery store manager. We spent about 20 minutes running through some typical, and not so typical, questions that you could be asked in an interview. When we finished, she left with the confidence she needed to apply.

The next day we had an employer contact us with a position that needed to be filled ASAP. I thought back to the day before and knew that Emily would be perfect for the job. I quickly contacted her to tell her about the opening, only to find out that she already got the job at the grocery store! She had gone in, asked to speak with the manager and was asked for an interview on the spot. She nailed it and the rest is history! She was ecstatic and so was I. It was at this moment I knew I had a job that was truly going to help youth in my community.

"Role play and getting ready for the common questions makes a huge difference in your confidence. I really get uncomfortable when I get unexpected "classic interview question" and not sure what to answer. Thanks for putting up these resources for us!"
