Why Should I Hire You?

June 14, 2011

Probably one of the more nerve-racking steps in your job application process is going to be the infamous interview. Many shudder at the mere thought of the word, but don’t be one of them! There are plenty of ways to prepare for an interview, and believe me, if you show up to the interview with your homework done, the employer will notice! The interviewer has probably taken time out of their busy schedule to read your resume and to get to know who you are, so why not do the same in return! Check out their website, talk to people you may know that work or have worked there, just do whatever you can to get to know your potential employer. Once you’ve done your homework, try and relate what you have to offer to some of their key attributes.

To get you started, I’ve jotted down a few interview questions that I’ve been asked before:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why do you want to work for this company/organization?
  • Give an example of a time when you provided great customer service.
  • What is your greatest strength? …weakness?
  • Tell me about a time when you made a mistake, and the steps you took to rectify the situation.
  • If you were a kitchen appliance, what would you be and why?
  • Why should I hire you?

These are just a handful of many different questions that you could be asked. Just click here if you’re looking for some more useful tips on interviews. At the end of the day, the employer wants to know if you’re prepared and a good fit for their workplace. So do your homework! Know what the job may require you to do, what the expectations are, and show that you’re genuinely interested in working for the employer. If you really want to impress them, bring some questions of your own. Don’t over do it, but you can ask some simple questions like “When will you be making a decision?” or “What are the day to day responsibilities of this job?” You could even ask some questions about corporate culture or values, it’ll show you’re engaged!

I’d like to hear some of the cool, hard, or just plain weird questions you’ve been asked in an interview, so feel free to share them in the comments below!

Good luck!
